DSA: Europe in the hands of the digital giants 
We, the undersigned active representatives of all of the cultural and creative industries in France, cannot silently watch the gains we have made over the past 20 years in terms of protecting our rights on Internet be challenged precisely at the time France holds the Presidency of the European Union.
 
The Digital Services Act aims to reinforce the responsibility and duty of care of all digital services; that is to say, to regulate online content and protect citizens against illegal content.
 
Good intentions may be there, but Europe is not walking the talk. 

When the European Parliament and the Council vote to lessen the responsibility of giant digital players and weaken the ability of rightholders to appeal against pirated content, how can this be understood? France, which has always spearheaded the protection of our artistic works and content faced with the Internet giants, must seize this opportunity, along with the other Member States, to put an end to the "digital wild west".
The stakes are too high to move forward in a hurry on the grounds that an across-the-board regulation is urgent or due to a tight timetable. Legislation on digital services must remain in the general interest, without weakening the enforcement of copyright, the only guarantor of freedom of expression and cultural diversity.
 
This is why we solemnly ask our Government, our elected representatives, and our representatives within the European institutions to create the conditions for a leap forward during the trialogue in order to restore consistency between the spirit and the letter of the DSA, and in particular to better fight against illegal offers and content, including beyond the marketplaces, and to avoid weakening or challenging European and national achievements in terms of respect for intellectual property rights. This must be the ambition of the French Presidency of the European Union.
 
Our sectors already have a long history on the Internet: it must remain a strength for the benefit of us all.
