A residency is a key moment in an artist’s career.
Given Spain’s expertise and tradition in the wool sector, ADAGP, the Casa de Velázquez and the Manufactures nationales are partnering to set up a new support scheme to enable a visual artist from the French art scene to participate in a three-month research and production residency at the Casa de Velázquez in Madrid. This residency, conceived as a research stay in the field of wool-based creation, will provide an opportunity to highlight the trades and expertise of this European sector, which faces major challenges relating to relocation.

What is the residency programme?
- A three-month residency at the Casa de Velázquez
- A workshop/living space at the Casa de Velázquez, access to the institution’s facilities (engraving and sculpture workshop, recording and music studio, library and dining room) and the opportunity to take part in the CASA&CO exhibition
- Depending on the schedule, the artist will also have the opportunity to be put in touch with the Real Fábrica de Tapices in Madrid and gain access to the Mobilier National’s materials library and colour chart.
How much is the grant?
The winner will receive a €6,000 living allowance, a €2,000 budget to make a prototype, and their travel expenses between their home and Madrid will be covered.
Who can apply?
A visual artist from the French art scene (has been living or working in France for at least five years, or is a French national living abroad), in the middle of their career.
What are the application requirements?
The application must be submitted in French. The process is available on ADAGP's application platform.

Opened in 1928 in Madrid, the Casa de Velázquez is a French institution operating under the supervision of the Ministry of Higher Education and Research (MESR) as part of the network of five French schools operating abroad.
Since its creation, the Casa de Velázquez has developed its activities around a unique model, supporting both contemporary artistic creation and scientific research in the humanities and social sciences.
It fulfils this dual mission through the joint efforts of its two components: the Académie de France in Madrid (artistic section) and the École des hautes études hispaniques et ibériques – EHEHI (scientific section).
The Académie de France in Madrid coordinates initiatives aimed at artists across all disciplines. A place for creation and research as much as for living, it enables artists – whether emerging or established – to consolidate their artistic direction and experiment with new ways of working. The AFM is responsible for implementing the artistic programme at the Casa de Velázquez, collaborating in particular with numerous local and international organisations.

Formed from the merger of the Mobilier National and the Cité de la Céramique – Sèvres & Limoges, the Manufactures Nationales were established on 1 January 2025 to promote the excellence of French craftsmanship and showcase the richness of this tangible and intangible heritage, with over 53 artistic trades practised within its factories and workshops.
Unique in the world, this new public body dedicated to the decorative arts, craft trades and design combines heritage and creativity to play a central role in implementing the national strategy for the craft trades. Its work focuses on six priority areas: training; research; creation; support for the fragile ecosystem of the craft trades; the promotion of heritage; and the international promotion of craftsmanship.
Building on four centuries of history, it comprises: 2 museums (the National Ceramics Museum in Sèvres; the Adrien Dubouché National Museum in Limoges), 9 manufacturing facilities and creative workshops (including the National Manufactory of Sèvres, the Gobelins Tapestry Manufactory; the Beauvais Tapestry Manufactory; the Savonnerie Carpet Manufactory; the lace workshops of Alençon and Le Puy-en-Velay; the contemporary furniture research and design workshop), 7 restoration workshops and a furniture department.
With a strong regional focus, this public body operates in eight departments: in Paris, in Hauts-de-Seine (Sèvres), in Hérault (Lodève), in Creuse (Aubusson), in Orne (Alençon), in Haute-Loire (Puy-en-Velay), in Haute-Vienne (Limoges) and in Oise (Beauvais).
