PRESS RELEASE: WELCOME FRANCK RIESTER, FRENCH MINISTER OF CULTURE
The ADAGP and the 170,000 visual artists it represents wish to congratulate Mr Franck Riester on his appointment as French Minister of Culture and Communication.
We would like to acknowledge the work carried out by Mrs Françoise Nyssen and her commitment to protecting copyrights, especially in the context of the ongoing European discussions.
We are convinced that Franck Riester's expertise and knowledge of the creative sectors will make a valuable contribution to protecting copyrights, fighting against piracy and to a better sharing of value, for the benefit of creators.
If freedom and creation go hand in hand, today they are weakened by the current context. We owe it to both the artists and future generations, to preserve these two values and to promote them around the world.
Beyond the issues common to all sectors, we would like to draw the Minister's attention to some fundamental issues for visual artists:
- Supporting the implementation of exhibition royalties, which, although recognised by French law, are unfortunately not extensively applied;
- Strengthening the place of visual arts on television, particularly contemporary creation, to promote better knowledge of current artistic practices and currents and to showcase the richness and diversity of French artistic creation.
- Funding and implementing public policies to increase the international reach of the French art scene.
We appreciate the Minister's first words and note his passion for artists and creation. We will stand at his side to defend copyrights and develop the influence of the French art scene.
