THE ADAGP 2018 DIGITAL ART REVELATION – VIDEO ART AWARD WENT TO ISMAËL JOFFROY CHANDOUTIS
For the fourth consecutive year, the ADAGP is partnering with the Le Fresnoy – National Studio of Contemporary Arts, in Tourcoing France, to reward an emerging artist in the Digital Art – Video Art category.
The Panorama exhibition, the annual showcase of creation at Le Fresnoy – National Studio of Contemporary Arts, presents all the productions of young art students as well as those of guest art professors. It includes 54 unpublished works (digital, video and sound installations, sculptures, photographs, performances, etc.) on display for the public in all the artistic fields explored at Le Fresnoy. Panorama is an opportunity for the public and for professionals to discover the emerging figures of the national and international art scene.
As part of the "Panorama 20" exhibition (22 September – 30 December, 2018), the works of second-year students who produced digital works and videos were submitted to a jury composed of Miguel Chevalier (digital artist) , Fabien Simode (Editor in Chief of l’Œil), José Manuel Gonçalvès (Director of the Centquatre-Paris), the winners of previous editions, Régina Demina (Revelation 2016) and Randa Maroufi (Revelation 2015). The 2018 Digital Art-Art Video Revelation award went to:
Ismaël Joffroy Chandoutis for the film Swatted
The jury warmly commended “this film work, without a camera, which breaks all the markers, those of the genre, the viewer, the aesthetic markers, and those of 3D. This film laden with technologies deals with a dramatic topical issue related to new technologies: swatting. This art house film demonstrates the spectacle of violence by blurring the boundaries between reality and fiction. Ismaël delivers an open work, a genre film, of a new genre.
The winner receives a prize of €5,000 from the ADAGP and will have a profile filmed and shown on the Arte website.
An honourable mention went to Thomas Garnier for his installation Cenotaphs. "It deals with another hot topic, ghost cities that go directly from construction sites to ruins. This highly referenced installation is reinforced by a video that’s off the scale. A metaphorical reflection on the forms of architecture, this moving model becomes sculpture. The author, in this extremely simple yet rich in inventive aesthetic findings piece, conveys the expansion of cities and the place of people in the city," said the jury.
Both will be honoured at the ADAGP’s special Revelations ceremony at the Centquatre, Paris, in January 2019.
