National and regional institutions offer numerous support schemes dedicated to comic strip authors.
The DRACs grant a number of aids to comic book artists: individual creation aids, studio installation and equipment purchase allowances (AIA).
For more information, contact your regional DRAC
Regional book agencies award grants for writing, creation and residencies. Find out more from your local book agency, and consult the Guide des aides aux auteurs (Guide to author support) published by the Fédération interrégionale du livre et de la lecture (FILL), or the Maison des écrivains et de la littérature website.
The Centre National du Livre (CNL) awards 3 types of grants to self-published authors. These enable them to carry out an individual project intended for publication: the discovery grant, the creation grant and the sabbatical year grant.
More information on the CNL website
ADAGP also develops grants based on calls for projects:
- The Révélation Bande dessinée, in partnership with the Quai des Bulles festival in Saint-Malo, awards a prize each year to an emerging artist who is both a scriptwriter and a cartoonist (€5,000 prize, an exhibition at the ADAGP and a portrait filmed by Arte);
- The Comic Strip Residency at the French Academy in Rome - Villa Medici and the CIBDI in Angoulême. The winner receives a 2-month residency in Rome, 2 months in Angoulême, an €8,000 grant and support from the institutions;
- A grant of €15,000 to support the publication of a first monograph for authors who are members of ADAGP;
- The grant for the creation of a fanzine, worth €1,000 to €2,000.
